Voice can steer Work and Codex while a task is running

ChatGPT Voice can now start, prioritize, interrupt, and redirect tasks inside Work or Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app. It can also give spoken or on-screen progress updates while the work continues.

That is different from ordinary Voice in Chat. Instead of only talking through an answer, Voice in Work and Codex can coordinate the tools and permissions available to the selected experience.

A spoken correction can replace a long typed instruction

Imagine Codex is updating your website and starts changing the checkout page when you only wanted a new homepage. You can interrupt and say, “Pause. Leave checkout alone. Only change the homepage.”

The useful part is not talking to a chatbot for the sake of it. It is being able to correct direction while an agent is already working instead of waiting for the wrong task to finish.

Start with one folder and one low-risk job

  1. Open the ChatGPT desktop app on macOS or Windows and choose Work or Codex.
  2. Open one local folder or project that contains only what the task needs.
  3. Select the Voice control and allow the required microphone permission.
  4. Describe the outcome, the files it may use, what it must not change, and how you will review the result.
  5. Interrupt if the task moves outside those limits, then inspect the final changes before anything is shared or published.

Computer access still follows your permissions

Voice does not receive unrestricted access to your computer. It uses the tools and permissions already available to Work or Codex. Local computer context may require Screen & Audio Recording or Accessibility permission in addition to the microphone.

Use the narrowest access that completes the job. Avoid opening an entire drive, password folder, financial archive, or customer-data directory when one project folder is enough.

Availability depends on your account and app

Voice in Work and Codex is a desktop capability for eligible accounts on macOS and Windows. Availability can depend on your plan, region, workspace settings, and app version.

Standalone Voice in Work and Codex is not available on the web or as a selectable mobile experience. OpenAI documents paired iOS remote access, but the agent itself remains tied to the desktop Work or Codex experience.

The safe first test

Give it a reversible task such as organizing draft files, reviewing a local document folder, or changing one noncritical page in a test project. State one explicit boundary before work begins.

The feature is ready to be useful when you can see the current task, stop it quickly, understand which permissions are active, and review the result before it leaves your computer.
