Start with one job that keeps coming back
Give your ChatGPT dot one responsibility, the sources it needs, and a clear point where it should come back to you. Try tracking decisions and deadlines for a friends' trip.
Dots are agents that continue assigned work between conversations. OpenAI introduced them at DevDay on September 29, 2026. Launch announcement.
The result you're looking for is a current list of what's settled, what's due, and what needs your decision. Booking the hotel can stay with you.
Check whether dots have reached your account
As checked October 2, 2026, rollout is gradual. OpenAI lists Pro 100, Pro 200, and Pro 500 for users over 18 outside the EEA, UK, and Switzerland; Business Premium worldwide; and Enterprise worldwide with access enabled by whoever manages the work account. Eligibility doesn't guarantee that dots are visible yet.
Create your dot in the desktop app or a desktop browser. Mobile app use needs the supporting update; mobile web isn't supported. Conversations with your dot don't count toward ChatGPT usage limits, but Work or Codex tasks it manages use those products' limits. Access and usage.
Share the trip details it actually needs
1. Open dots in ChatGPT and follow the introduction. App connections can wait. Getting started.
2. Prepare dates, budget, unresolved choices, and deadlines. Remove passport numbers, payment details, and private information about friends.
3. Paste the notes or connect their app. Have your dot confirm which sources it can read.
Its cloud computer can work while your laptop is off. Local files or apps require your computer connected, online, and running the ChatGPT app. Pasted notes keep this first run easy to inspect. Computers and apps.
Copy this first-job brief
Replace the bracketed fields and paste this with your notes. This suggested prompt hasn't been tested by Nyla.
Help me track decisions and deadlines for [TRIP] until [END DATE AND TIME ZONE].
Sources: [SOURCES].
Budget: [BUDGET].
Alert me in ChatGPT when: [ALERT CONDITIONS].
First, confirm which sources you can read. Make a list with: item, confirmed fact or open question, deadline, source, and decision needed from me. Mark missing or conflicting information. Do not infer that a booking or payment happened.
Show me this first list and wait for my review before beginning ongoing follow-ups or creating a schedule.
After I approve, keep a draft decision list current from the sources available to you. Keep routine updates in that list and notify me only under the alert conditions. State which new information you can receive automatically and which I must provide. Ask before adding sources or changing the scope.
Do not book, buy, cancel, send messages to others, or change shared documents. Draft suggestions for my review. Confirm the responsibility, boundaries, end date, and any follow-up arrangement you saved.Fill in the details
[TRIP] names the plan. [END DATE AND TIME ZONE] closes the responsibility. [SOURCES] identifies the notes or exact connected documents. [BUDGET] sets the spending limit. [ALERT CONDITIONS] names when you want an interruption.
Example inputs
For a fictional Austin weekend: four friends, November 6 to 8, $450 each, with hotel choice due October 12. End the responsibility November 9, 2026, America/Chicago. Use the pasted planning notes. Request an alert for a deadline within 48 hours, conflicting dates, or a choice above budget.
Check the first list before it follows up
The hotel should appear as an open decision due October 12, not a completed booking. Check dates and cited sources, and correct missing details before allowing follow-ups.
In the desktop app, open your dot's profile, then Activity, to inspect delegated tasks and requests for input. A completed run isn't proof that the result was delivered. If access is missing, resolve the connection request and have it retry the affected step. Tasks and review.
Choose an ongoing responsibility or a fixed check-in
An ongoing responsibility lets your dot decide when to follow up. A fixed check-in needs a saved schedule, including timing, time zone, end date, and where results should go. Choose after reviewing the first list.
For ongoing work, approve follow-ups within the brief's boundaries. With pasted notes, it can't watch updates it hasn't received. For a fixed version, copy the request below, then verify the saved instructions in Scheduled. Connecting an app alone doesn't establish event monitoring; supported events need a specific request and confirmation. Recurring work.
Check [SOURCE] at [TIME AND TIME ZONE] on [DAYS] through [END DATE]. Update the draft decision list. Notify me in ChatGPT only for [ALERT CONDITIONS]. Keep the existing action boundaries. Confirm the saved schedule, source, destination, and end date.Know which work you're stopping
Pause stops your dot's current main task. Open Activity to stop delegated tasks separately, and Scheduled to disable or delete recurring work. Ending a call doesn't necessarily end the job. Stopping work doesn't undo completed actions. Stopping controls.
Your brief sets boundaries alongside app permissions and automatic action review. Optional custom rules are under Settings → Personalization → Permissions → Custom rules. They can require approval for actions such as sending messages, but don't grant app access or guarantee error-free behavior. Custom rules.
Keep booking and sending with you for this first job. Expand the responsibility only after the decision list is accurate and you can see what your dot is following up on.
